Job Purpose

Responsible for ensuring the safe and compliant handling, storage, and disposal of radioactive waste generated by the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP). Implement the Radioactive Waste Management process for all types of radioactive wastes in alignment with waste minimization and waste disposal criteria as per the regulatory requirements for the predisposal management of radioactive waste. This role involves technical oversight, implementation of safety practices, and regulatory compliance in radioactive waste management.

Key Activities, Responsibility & Accountability

Radioactive Waste Management
Responsibilities and Accountabilities:  
•    Waste Characterization
o    Support BNPP in developing the characterization and categorization program for radioactive waste materials generated by the BNPP.
o    Provide technical expertise to ensure precise identification of waste types, radioactivity levels, and appropriate categorization.
o    Provide oversight and support the implementation to the scaling factor program of radioactive waste to evaluate radioactive inventory of waste.
•    Waste Handling and Packaging Oversight:
o    Oversee the development and implementation of best practices for the safe handling, packaging, and labeling of radioactive waste materials.
o    Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols to prevent contamination and protect workers and the environment.
o    Support the implementation of inventory management activities of radioactive waste treatment equipment and expendables to enable efficient waste management operations.
o    Control and dispose of clearance level waste to minimize radioactive waste in compliance with regulatory requirements.
•    Storage and Transportation Management:
o    Manage the technical aspects of safe storage of radioactive waste within the BNPP. Control transportation of radioactive waste on site to store radioactive waste properly in compliance with predisposal management requirements.
o    Monitor Low and Medium Level Radioactive Waste Interim Building (LMRWIB) and radioactive waste packages stored in LMRWIB to ensure regulatory compliance. 
o    Coordinate and monitor the technical aspects of off-site waste transportation, optimizing logistics and safety considerations.
•    Regulatory Compliance:
o    Stay at the forefront of evolving regulations governing radioactive waste management.
o    Lead the implementation of regulatory compliance measures and provide technical guidance to the team.
•    Procedure Development:
o    Oversee the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of technical procedures and protocols for the safe and efficient management of radioactive waste.
o    Ensure that procedures align with industry best practices and evolving safety standards.

•    Radiation Protection:
o    Support the implementation of strategies to minimize radiation exposure for personnel involved in waste management activities.
o    Provide technical expertise in the selection of protective equipment and exposure monitoring technologies.
•    Waste Minimization Strategies:
o    Lead the technical aspects of identifying opportunities for waste minimization, segregation, and potential recycling or reprocessing.
o    Lead technical research into innovative technologies and practices to reduce waste volume and associated hazards.
•    Quality Assurance:
o    Establish and maintain the highest standards for quality assurance in waste management processes, with a strong focus on technical accuracy.
o    Ensure meticulous record-keeping practices that meet regulatory requirements.
•    Emergency Response Planning Leadership:
o    Play a central role in the technical aspects of the development of comprehensive emergency response plans for radioactive waste incidents.
o    Collaborate closely with the facility's emergency management team to ensure technical preparedness and effective response.
•    Audits and Inspections:
o    Execute audits and inspections to assess the effectiveness of waste management practices.
o    Provide technical recommendations for improvements based on audit findings and observations.
•    Reporting:
o    Play a key role in the technical aspects of preparing reports for internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory agencies (i.e. FANR).
o    Ensure that reports provide a technical and comprehensive view of waste management activities, safety measures, and compliance status.
•    Collaboration:
o    Support operation of Radioactive Waste Management Committee to facilitate efficient and effective committee operation.
o    Collaborate with various departments within ENEC Operations and ENEC, providing technical input to ensure a holistic approach to waste management.
o    Facilitate technical coordination between operational areas

Professional Certifications

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science Degree.

Experience

•    7 years of relevant experience, out of which:
­    5 year of Nuclear Power Plant experience with 3 months of BNPP site experience.
•    APR-1400 or OPR-1000 experience in radiation safety area.
